A blog by Clint Combs

While watching ESPN Classic tonight I happened on a bit of trivia that I didn't know. I flipped over to the channel and began watching a baseball game from 1985. It was the game in which Pete Rose passed Ty Cobb on the all-time hit list.

I've probably seen his 4192nd hit a hundred times. I think I even saw it live, but the date that it happened didn't mean much to me... until 2001. Pete got his hit on September 11, 1985.

Obviously, the events of September 2001 far eclipse those of September 1985. If it wasn't for the attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon, sports fans would probably spend every September 11 talking about Pete. Given Pete's continuing insistance on avoiding responsibility for betting on baseball, it seems just that he's lost "ownership" of that date in history. Maybe someday Pete will take full ownership of his faults and get into the Hall. I doubt it.
