A blog by Clint Combs

I've been running Firefox 2.0 for some time now, but I'm seriously considering throwing in the towel... it's such a pig that my computing experience is almost unbearable when it's running. I'm using version 2.0.0.6 on Windows XP on my Dell laptop and the performance is awful. I spend so much time with my CPU pushing 100%! It's just ridiculous. It's killing my productivity...

I'm writing this entry in, believe it or not, Safari for Windows. I continue to hear people bitch about Safari compatibility with some web sites, but it seems a heck of a lot faster than Firefox and given my flirtations with OS/X, I can't help but check it out now and then.

As for being tempted by OS/X and the Mac... yes, I'm seriously considering that move too. Even though I've recently been dragged into the Windows development arena from the warm and cozy confines of Java and open source, I'm still considering a switch to the Mac. I'm increasingly impressed with the upcoming Panther version of OS/X and quite disappointed in Vista.

Of course, one of my big concerns is the migration of my Java development to the Mac. Obviously, it's a good environment for all kinds of Java development - plenty of Google and Sun employees use OS/X for Java development - but they're out in California with Fake Steve. I'm in the very real, down-to-earth world of Jacksonville, FL. Mac development jobs are virtually nonexistent in my neck of the woods and Java development jobs using Macs are just as rare.

What are your thoughts on ditching Firefox and Windows? ... I'm truly tempted.

Yeah. I'm also pretty annoyed with the performance of Firefox much of the time.

However I use six computers with various operating systems, and it's the only browser that has something like Google Browser Sync that will keep my bookmarks and settings across all of them.

If there was a version of Safari for Linux and .mac worked on all platforms, then maybe I'd reconsider.

I use a Mac exclusively at home, and the performance of Safari on the few occasions I've tried it has been excellent. Particularly with Wikipedia, which for some reason, sucks horribly on Firefox.

In the company I work for (specializes in JEE development) 4 out of 5 new laptops are Mac Books Pro. Everyone wants one. I have switched to Ubuntu 100% for more than a year now. It installs great on all new hardware (so no more hacking yourself). So you could give it a try if you are fed up with Windows (like me).
